Spotlight: Vegetation Community Mapping, MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, California

Vernadero Group Inc. is performing vegetation community mapping within 44,700 acres at four Range Training Areas (RTAs) aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms.

Although vegetation mapping for 23 RTAs was completed in 2016, that survey did not include

the 4 RTAs that the Installation acquired after the 2016 mapping had begun. Our survey and mapping will define the boundaries of vegetation communities and identify sensitive and invasive plant species.

Our biologists note any live Agassiz's desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), cryptogrammic soil crusts, anthropogenic disturbances, and pottery sherds, artwork, or tools. The data we gather will help MCAGCC Twentynine Palms develop a more compete picture of the vegetation and resources within its boundaries. This will enable the Installation to implement adaptive monitoring and an ecosystem management approach to achieve its conservation management goals.
