Sick Building Syndrome Remediation and Facility Restoration

Under growing pressure to reuse existing military facilities where possible, the US Army contracted with Vernadero to remediate and restore a 2,500 SF airfield administration building vacated due to complaints of poor Indoor Air Quality and potential Sick Building Syndrome. The building was evaluated by Vernadero’s CIH and Compliance Team and remediated by Vernadero’s Construction Services Team for asbestos containing materials, lead based paint, and indoor air quality/mold. Restoration included water penetration repair, surface encapsulation, interior paint, and new flooring, ceiling tiles, insulation, HVAC, and roofing.

Parking Lot Reconstruction using LID and Green Technologies

Vernadero completed a series of LID and Green Technology renovations to the 5.0 acre Fort Huachuca Commissary Parking Lot. To remedy hazardous flooding conditions, Vernadero designed and built a complex system of underground storage chambers, rain gardens, and infiltration galleries which now eliminates flooding hazards and provides a water storage and infiltration capacity of ~0.5 AC/FT of water per event. In addition, Vernadero replaced inefficient parking lot lighting with new LED High-Efficiency lights, and redesigned internal traffic flows (both pedestrian and vehicular) to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Real Property Disposal Support to US Army Reserve

The Army Reserve has a number of facilities that are no longer essential to the Command structure. These excess facilities are transferred out of Army Reserve ownership to other federal, state, local, or private entities. Vernadero is currently conducting site visits and preparing documentation to support the disposal of eleven facilities. This includes preparing an Environmental Condition of Property report, Asbestos Surveys, National Environmental Policy Act documentation, and coordination letters to meet requirements of Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Natural Resources Support to the US Army Reserve

A healthy, balanced ecosystem is essential for realistic and sustainable military testing and training. Military installations often have unique habitat and offer protections for natural resources not afforded on privately owned lands. In order to manage these resources, the military must first know what resources exist. Vernadero recently assisted the 81st Regional Support Command in inventorying its natural resources at eleven Army Reserve facilities. This included flora/fauna and invasive species surveys, wetland delineations, and Geographical Information System data collection for facilities in Florida, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
